Findings of the periodic overhaul "Suffice it to say that of all those overhauled, only 10 per cent were found to be without any clinically discoverable disorders. There were some 25 - 30 per cent who knew they had some disease; less than one half of these were under medical treatment at the time of examination. The remaining examinees (some 65 to 70 per cent) all had some pathological disorder of which they were unaware, or which they ignored." (J Roy.Coll. Gen. Pract., 1970, 20, 147)
Subsequent research by others show similar results. Moreover, this is not historical. Even within the last decade there have been reports of the Army lowering its medical requirements because potential recruits could not meet them. In 2007 the media is full of concerns of Government and health professionals over the level of clinical obesity in the nation. We may find the incidence of certain dis-eases is reportedly reduced, including heart disease, but there have been high rises in the incidence of others, such as Alzheimer's disease and Autism. | ||
